For the production of lead-free electronics you need unleaded solder, as well as lead-free components and circuit boards. Furthermore, unleaded solder requires a different kind of soldering procedure than conventional ones. The major difference lies in the need for higher remelting temperatures, approx. 230 °C, which also means a narrower process window, consequently avoiding unnecessary strain on components.

We have installed a VaporPhase machine for vapour phase soldering, and for the last two years or so we have always made sure of purchasing lead-free components where available. Lead-free components are always highlighted in our MPS system. The components not yet available as lead-free, but which have been given a date for lead-free introduction, are also registered.

Today, not all components are available as lead-free. Furthermore, it is not always possible to receive precise information from distributors and manufacturers regarding when and, in certain cases, if components will be available as lead-free.

We do undertake the task of producing a preliminary inquiry with regards to components, to assure lead-free customer circuit cards and to identify components by the following criteria:
- Lead-free component today
- Will be available as lead-free from (date)
- Not available, i.e. no information available from distributor/manufacturer
- Will not be available as lead-free

This identification process provides the customer with enough information for a decision on how to proceed, e.g. the need for product reconstruction or cancellation.

The identification, as described above, is an on-the-spot account. Our lead-free component supply is improving on a daily basis.
